Ecotourism at Nakia
We developed Nakia Resort & Dive for travelers seeking a healthy vacation at a sustainable, comfortable, mid-priced resort in a pristine area. Our main attractions are natural - rainforests with rare native birds and spectacular waterfalls, pristine beaches, and world-class reefs. To leave a light footprint on the Earth, we built a small "green" resort that minimizes environmental impact. We conserve the environment throughout the resort and adjacent organic garden.
Nakia's guests enjoy the convenience of on-demand hot water and continuous 240V/50hz power provided by the sustainable, natural energy of the sun, water, and wind. We use local building materials; minimized tree removal during construction; and compost, burn or bury refuse, depending on composition. We reduced the need for swimming pool chemicals by two-thirds by employing an ozone generator.
Our water comes from artesian springs on the mountain above the resort. Nakia's restaurant features all-natural food, much of it from our own organic garden business, Taveuni Organic Produce. We use water-conserving irrigation in the garden and work towards zero waste in the restaurant.
The resort and garden provide income for many local residents through land leases, employment, and purchased services. Through a variety of community activities, we also provide opportunities for guests to protect the environment and experience local Fijian and Indo-fijian cultures.
We strongly support environmental stewardship, community development, and sustainable tourism. Nakia Resort & Dive is a member of the International Ecotourism Society and an affiliate of Green Globe, an organization that develops and promotes ecotourism standards around the world.
