Ecotourism at Nakia Resort & Dive

We developed Nakia Resort & Dive for travelers seeking a healthy vacation at a sustainable, comfortable, mid-priced resort in a pristine area. Our main attractions are natural – rainforests with rare native birds, world–class reefs, pristine beaches, and spectacular waterfalls. To leave a light footprint on the Earth, we designed and built a small "green" resort to minimize environmental impact. We conserve the environment in policies and practices throughout the resort and in our restaurant, dive business– Taveuni Ocean Sports, and adjacent organic garden. Whenever possible, we reduce, re–use and re–cycle.

We are proud to be one of few eco resorts in the Fiji Islands. Since most of Fiji, and all of Taveuni, is “off the grid”, most resorts rely on 24-hour diesel generators. Nakia's guests enjoy the convenience of on–demand hot water and continuous 240V/50hz power provided by the sustainable, natural, and quiet energy of the sun, water, and wind. We use local building materials; minimized tree removal during construction; and compost, burn or bury refuse, depending on composition.

All of Nakia's water comes from artesian springs on the mountain above the resort. To ensure pure drinking water, we installed a state–of–the–art filtration system that includes 1 micron filtration and bacterial eradication via UV light. Nakia's 12–meter fresh–water pool is the largest on Taveuni. In addition to a large sand filter, we use an ozonator to help purify the pool water, thus reducing the amount of chlorine needed by 2/3. Nakia's restaurant features all–natural food, much of it from our own organic garden business, Taveuni Organic Produce. We produce fresh organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs for our own restaurant and supply other resorts. With our staff of Fijian and Indo–Fijian farmers, we pick just what we need each day, storing all produce in carefully controlled conditions until served in our dining rooom or delivered to other resorts. In keeping with our commitment to environmental sustainability, we employ water–conserving irrigation and use no synthetic chemicals of any kind. From seed to harvest, everything in the garden is as nature intended. We eat the same healthy and tasty food that we serve our guests.

The resort and garden provide income for many local residents through land leases, employment, and purchased services. Through a variety of community activities, we also provide opportunities for guests to protect the environment and experience local Fijian and Indo–Fijian cultures.

Nakia Resort & Dive is a member of the International Ecotourism Society and an affiliate of Green Globe. These organizations develop and promote ecotourism standards around the world. We have incorporated their recommendations into Nakia's Environmental Plan, which guides our community development, sustainable tourism, and environmental stewardship. Eco–tropical Resorts acknowledged Nakia's sustainability by awarding Nakia its highest rating for our energy, water, recycling, land conservation, and community development policies and practices. « home top »
